<p><strong>Fight Cancer With Physical Fitness– The Power is Yours</strong></p>
<p>For many, physical fitness is part of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, if you are undergoing treatment for cancer, or if you are in remission from the disease, regular physical activity should be an important part of your ongoing fight for fitness.</p>
<p>So what are the benefits of physical fitness for a person with cancer?</p>
<p>Cancer can be depressing. Just knowing that you are living with a disease that could shorten your lifespan is a constant wear to mental health. Regular physical activity such as strength training, aerobic exercise, biking, or hiking is a great way to relieve depression and to ease your worries. Studies have shown that people who exercise regularly are less depressed than those who lead sedentary lives. Cancer patients who exercise are therefore giving themselves a mental health edge by taking care of their physical fitness.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/prevention/physicalactivity">Physical fitness helps to boost your overall immune system</a>. When you have cancer, you need all the help you can get with battling the disease. Regular exercise gives you the extra energy your body needs to fight the disease of cancer. Being physically fit helps all the major organs in your body that aid and support you as you cope with cancer.</p>
<p>The National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health says that there is strong evidence that physical fitness may reduce the risk of developing colon, breast, lung, endometrial, and prostate cancers.</p>
<p>The NCI also has information about how exercise may positively impact on the rate of cancer survivorship. Some studies seem to suggest that those patients, who exercised regularly after cancer diagnosis lived longer, lead a better quality of life, and had a more positive outlook for their recovery.</p>
<p>Many who have cancer take drugs or therapies that can, in some ways, be as devastating as the disease itself. Another advantage of physical fitness is that exercise has no contraindications or negative side effects, unless you overdo the physical activity.</p>
<p>Regular physical exercise can help keep you balanced in body, mind, and spirit. If you have cancer, if you are undergoing<a href="http://www.mesothelioma.com/treatment/"> mesothelioma treatment</a>, or if your cancer is in remission, physical exercise should be an important and regular part of taking very good care of yourself.</p>

<p>There are events in our lives that make us aware of our own mortality.  I have had three definitive instances in my lifetime that have done this.  Unfortunately, that was all those particular instances did &#8212; made me aware.</p>
<p>Most of us know that one day we are going to die.  As we have grown into adulthood we have lost loved ones and we reflect on their life and we take a moment, especially if someone dies suddenly or unexpectedly,  to realize that one day that will be us.  Sometimes we reflect for more than a moment, other times even less.  However long we reflect or pause, we move on and forward, but inside we may not genuinely believe that one day that will be us.</p>
<p>Our mortality is one of those intangibles in life because it is so hard to grasp.  We learn by experience, and while a brush with death, battling a life threatening illness or a near death experience may remind us that we are merely mortal, we may not actually accept the fact.</p>
<p>You see that is, in my opinion, the difference that really matters.  We can be aware that we will one day die, but we may not really in our hearts accept it.  For most of us we look at our deaths as something that may happen and if we concede the certainty, we cling to the belief that it is a day that is a long way off.</p>
<p>After my cardiac catheterization I went from being aware of, to accepting of my ultimate demise.  It was a moment that freed me of many of my worries and concerns.  To not only know, but genuinely, whole-heartedly accepted the one truth about life, my person was suddenly set free.</p>
<p>I have written about the detriments of negative energy in the past.  It was a concept that I was always well aware of, but until the moment of my mortality acceptance, it was more metaphysical than substantive. When I embraced my mortality, when I accepted that one day I will die &#8212; it was then that I fully began to live.</p>
<p>I no longer allow the, often times, real worries of daily living to impact my life.</p>
<p>I no longer allow the uncontrollable actions of others to dampen my joy of living.</p>
<p>I no longer complain, whine and chatter endlessly about the unimportant aspects of every day existence.</p>
<p>I do not love nor even like, the area in which I reside.  I don&#8217;t like the attitude of despair and hopelessness. I am not a fan of cold temperatures, icy roads, snow or any other aspect associated with winter in the Northeastern Untied States. However, right now at this moment in time, this is where I am.  I am here because of decisions that I made, so instead of bemoaning the aspects I don&#8217;t care for, I focus exclusively on the positives that are present.</p>
<p>Because I not only acknowledge and accept, but dare I say relish my mortality, I embrace the dawn of each and every new morning. When I go out for a jog in the sometimes very frigid morning air, I allow the briskness of the atmosphere to stimulate my senses. When the white precipitations falls from the sky, instead of grumbling about shoveling it, I look forward to the manual work I am physically capable of performing.</p>
<p>It is also about perspective:</p>
<ul>
<li>In the cold temperatures, I have a warm place to sleep.</li>
<li>In tough financial times, I have a family to love me and a family for me to love.</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://fatthenfitnow.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/zuma-beach.jpg"><img class="alignleft" title="zuma beach" src="http://fatthenfitnow.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/zuma-beach.jpg?w=126&#038;h=190" alt="" width="126" height="190" /></a>I no longer put off enjoying my life.  I recently went to Southern California to visit my sister and nephews.  Money isn&#8217;t as free as it has been in the past.  For a very brief moment I thought I should not go.  I <em>juggled</em> some bills<em>, put off </em>others and made the trek west.  The boys will only be young for a brief period of time and I want to be part of it as often as I can.</p>
<p>Because living a fit life is living a better life I have been quoted as saying, <em>&#8220;Eat and exercise as if you will live forever; live as if you will die tomorrow.&#8221;</em><em><br />
</em></p>
<p><em></em>I have a goal of changing my residence to a warmer climate, near the ocean and earning enough to unite my family in that one location, yet as I work and plan toward that goal, I accept, that for reasons beyond my control, my life may end before I get there so &#8212;<strong> I will not allow today to pass in hopes of a tomorrow that may never arrive.</strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Who do I blame because I&#8217;m unfit? </em>That is the question I get frequently. I have received this question in messages, emails, phone calls and from clients  in my office. It seems that we are all looking to place <strong>blame</strong>.</p>
<p>Unless you suffer from an underlying medical or hormonal condition, the onus is on ourselves.</p>

<p>In the last chapter of<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Then-Fit-Now-Beyond/dp/1453793755" target="_blank"> my book,</a> I trace back to where my emotional reliance on food began.  Though I traced it back to my childhood, it was not a valid excuse. Some day, as much as we may not want to, we must all mature and accept responsibility for ourselves.</p>
<p>I alone was responsible for my morbid obesity.</p>
<p>Which brings me to the following; I received an email from a client, who was especially upset about WILK  radio talk show entertainer, Steve Corbett, who has endorsed businesses in which the food consumed can lead to obesity. This friend was ripping, not because of the commercial, but because the pious and self-righteous Steve Corbett,  constantly preaches against many unhealthy activities. The great unkempt one even goes so far as to rail against smoking, proclaiming an extreme view, that all tobacco CEO&#8217;s should be locked up.  My client one time followed a vegetarian diet solely because this radio host proclaimed it as a healthy lifestyle choice.</p>

<p>It amazes me at how much sway an entertainer can have over some people, but that is the nature of advertising. It is the reason that sponsors will pay exorbitant fees to have someone endorse their product.</p>
<p>However, the point being that no matter the hypocrisy, my client reasoned that if Corbett who portends to be all knowing  preaches other healthy habits, he must know what he is talking about. He began stopping by this establishment regularly. He had so much faith in what the host was saying, that he took all of the education he had received through our meetings and tossed it aside. Much of the gains in his health that he had made fell by the way side as his old habits reared their ugly heads.</p>
<p>Finally, after regaining about twenty-five pounds and feeling so cruddy because he hadn&#8217;t been in the gym in almost one month, he sent me an email. He asked for an appointment to get back on track.</p>
<p>Once back in my office, before he even sat down, he began assigning blame. I genuinely could not believe what I was hearing.</p>
<p>I stopped him mid-sentence. I repeated back to him what he was saying. After I repeated myself a few times he understood what had happened. He utilized his faith and trust in another person to justify <strong>HIS</strong> falling back into bad habits. It was easy, because someone he respected, someone in whom he had put trust, was, via a paid endorsement, implying that  it was okay to eat sugar laden junk food.</p>
<p>After a few weeks my client was back on track. He would soon go from fat to fit.  It only took him two weeks to take off half the weight he had regained and he is back into healthy activities in the gym.</p>
<p>He learned the hard way that entertainers who are paid spokespeople aren&#8217;t always correct.</p>

<p>You know what that means, don&#8217;t you?</p>
<p>Yep, it is resolution time.</p>
<p>I am not a fan of the whole New Year&#8217;s resolution idea.  I set goals.  I always set mostly attainable ones and one that <strong>SEEMS</strong> unreachable&#8230;.. then I go get it!</p>
<p>However, there are a lot of folks out there that do make resolutions and many of you do make a very solid attempt to keep them.  Two of the big resolutions is losing weight and getting in shape. Some times these two are interdependent and other times they are not.  If you are overweight then both must be your goal, but buyer beware.  There are those out there who will promise you the results you seek for little or no effort.  You&#8217;ve heard them I&#8217;m sure:</p>
<p>-take this pill and you will lose weight.</p>
<p>-sprinkle this on your food and you will eat less and lose weight.</p>
<p>-drink this chemical conconcation and you will lose weight.</p>
<p>-exercise on this machine for 5 minutes a day and you will get rid of love handles.</p>
<p>-20 minutes a day 3 days a week on this new fangled, advanced equipment and you will get in shape.</p>

<p>Please feel free to add any miracle weight loss and fitness promise to which you have been exposed.  For those of us who have actually accomplished dropping body fat and improving our fitness level, we are well aware that the majority of these claims are pure balderdash.  I know personally, that my desperation when tipping the scales at 340 pounds, led me to try some of these results without effort promises.</p>
<p>I must confess that I did lose; <strong>money</strong>!</p>
<p>And I did gain something; more <strong>weight</strong>!</p>

<p>Even the most sound eating and exercise plans can become fads if you don&#8217;t change your mindset, habits and lifestyle.  I thought about this listening to Mike and Mike on ESPN Radio this morning.  During a spot for P90X2, Mike Golic was talking about how he was going to start getting back in shape in the new year.  From what I have read about the P90X system, it is a sound plan. However, it wasn&#8217;t the promotion of the plan that got me thinking, it was Golic himself.  If memory serves me correctly; wasn&#8217;t he on the NurtiSystem plan at one time?  I remember seeing him in commercials with Dan Marino. And if he did the first P90X, why is having to get back in shape this year?  Did he give up after the three month cycle?</p>

<p>The big question is: Is Mike Golic stuck in the overweight mindset?  Is he a slave to the mentaility of going on and off a plan?  I honestly don&#8217;t know.</p>
<p>Yet, as I have said, any good plan can become a fad.  I am a low carbohydrate proponent.  I have drifted into more of a paleolithic/primal type eating pattern; meaning most of my foods are natural, whole and unprocessed.  However, even this type of eating can become a fad, if the person who opts for this type of plan falls into the trap of going on a diet.  Atkins, South Beach, <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Then-Fit-Now-Beyond/dp/1453793755" target="_blank">A Life Beyond Weight Loss</a></strong>, Protein Power, The Zone, etc&#8230; will all provide short term, rapid results, and they all have the potential to have a long term positive impact.  The individual must understand that rapid weight loss can be followed by rapid weight gain if they are unwilling to embrace a whole new attitude concerning fitness and eating.  Once past the initial phase there is a lifelong approach that <strong>must</strong> be followed.</p>

<p>the initial response is<em>, &#8220;You&#8217;re on the Atkins diet.  I tried that once or twice. I lost weight, but it came back when I went off of it.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>The urge to scream <strong>no #$%^&amp;*(    &amp;^!</strong> is strong, but I fight it back and try to educate the person about the need for life long eating alterations. That is when I get the following, &#8220;<em>Yes, but I can&#8217;t only eat 20 grams of carbs every day for the rest of my life.&#8221;  </em></p>
<p><em></em>Desperately trying to keep sarcasm out of my voice I say to them that the 20 grams is the induction phase.  This statement is usually followed by a blank stare.  That is when I ask them if they read the <strong>entire</strong> book.  The reply to that is, &#8220;<em>The entire book?  No, I had a friend who told me what to do.&#8221;  </em>I simply shake my head and tell them that is when a good plan becomes a fad.</p>

<p>If dropping weight, getting in shape or both are your New Year&#8217;s resolutions, I applaud you on your goals, just be sure that whatever approach you chose, learn the entire plan.  Additionally, be aware that the your diet and exercise program  is <strong>NOT</strong> temporary&#8212;it is a new life choice.  So,  make sure to get a thorough check up before embarking on your very admirable resolutions and once you do, keep in mind: <em>weight loss <strong>is</strong> a side effect of fitness <strong>&#8212;</strong> fitness is <strong>not</strong> an end result of weight loss.</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you have lost weight, tried to lose weight or are just thinking about losing weight you have undoubtedly been inundated by advertising. And with New Year&#8217;s resolution time the miracle advertisements are even more prominent.</p>
<p>Be it television, radio, spam, billboards,  hell even folks walking the streets with <a title="Sandwich board" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich_board" rel="wikipedia">sandwich boards</a>… you are hit by a plethora of quick fix weight loss promising products..</p>
<p>Drink this in place of a meal and you will lose weight.</p>
<p>Order pre-packaged food and you will lose weight.</p>
<p>Take this “<em>natural</em>” pill and you will lose weight.</p>
<p><a href="http://fatthenfitnow.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/ccrane6.jpg"><img class="alignleft" title="big" src="http://fatthenfitnow.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/ccrane6.jpg?w=224&#038;h=300" alt="" width="224" height="300" /></a>I’ve been exposed to them all and when I was that guy on the left, I even tried a few. Everything from fasting, juicing, fruit only, to vegetable only diets all promise rapid weight loss without effort.</p>
<p>I am always skeptical of the fast, fat-loss fads that claim to bring forth  miracles that are too good to be true. Why? Because they are too good to be true. Anyone who knows me, has heard me on the radio, podcasts, seen me on television,  has read my book or this blog is aware that I am an avid low carbohydrate, whole food follower. They also understand that I am more than just about a <em><strong>diet</strong></em>.  I am a firm believer in the power and benefits of exercise and fitness.  <strong></strong>I work out seven days a week and live by the mantra that<strong> weight loss is simply a side effect of fitness</strong>.</p>
<p>The most effective way to lose weight and get in shape is following my plan. Okay, I’m a little biased. However, if you follow and apply the 3 D’s and the 3 E’s you have no option but to gain renewed health.</p>
<p><strong>Desire</strong> to get in shape</p>
<p><strong>Determine</strong> that you will do it.</p>

<p>Do you always take an elevator because even one flight of stairs leaves you exhausted and out of breath?</p>
<p>Is the simple act of tying your shoes a contortionistic maneuver?</p>
<p>Not all that long ago, my answers to the above questions would have been a resounding and embarrassing — yes!</p>
<p>I had finally tired of compromising my life, so on a fateful day in March of 2008, for the first time in two years, I hopped upon my dust-covered scale. The spring moaned and groaned as the needle revolved past the end of its’ limit and ventured into the “<em>additional</em>” numbers printed smaller and in red. The pointer bounced several times in a range of about ten pounds. I hoped it would stop at the lower end — it didn’t. I held my breath and peered down over the beach ball ballooning from my abdomen — I couldn’t quite see the rather large and over-sized dial. With a gale forced inhalation I sucked in my gut and strained once again to see the dreaded digits.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;">There it was, scales don’t lie, <span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>3&#8230; 4&#8230; 0..</strong>.</span></p>
<p>That is not a typo;<strong><span style="color:#ff0000;"> three hundred and forty ponderous, pachydermian pounds</span></strong>. In just over a pair of years I had added more than one hundred pounds to my previously well proportioned frame. I released my breath and heaved a heavy sigh. At least I could console myself with the ten pounds that clothing adds — never-mind; I was only wearing a pair of light cotton shorts.</p>
<p>Eventually, I stepped back. I paced the floor in stunned disbelieve. I knew I had gained weight, but there was no way I was over 300 pounds, let alone close to 350. Surely, after so long without use the scale must be out of calibration. That was the answer. I looked around and found a forty pound dumbbell. I placed it upon the platform expecting the number to possibly reach 80. No such luck — the indicator stopped spot on at 40.</p>
<p>It was official — in medical terms I was <a title="Obesity" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity" rel="wikipedia">morbidly obese</a>. In layman’s terms, I was fat.</p>
<p>The initial step to overcoming many problems is to first admit you <a href="http://betterlifeseminars.wordpress.com/2011/11/03/how-i-took-control-of-the-only-aspect-of-life-that-i-could/ccrane3/" rel="attachment wp-att-21"><img class="alignleft  wp-image-21" title="ccrane3" src="http://betterlifeseminars.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/ccrane3.jpg?w=157&#038;h=210" alt="" width="157" height="210" /></a>have a <a href="http://betterlifeseminars.wordpress.com/2011/11/03/how-i-took-control-of-the-only-aspect-of-life-that-i-could/ccrane4/" rel="attachment wp-att-22"><img class="alignright  wp-image-22" title="ccrane4" src="http://betterlifeseminars.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/ccrane4.jpg?w=102&#038;h=185" alt="" width="102" height="185" /></a>problem. Even with the numbers staring me in the face — I still wasn’t ready to admit it. Later that day I arrived at my practice and had my office manager, Linda, photograph me from the front and the side. I downloaded the pics to my PC and was prepared to see just a large, big-boned guy staring back at me — what I saw was anything but. Staring back was a pin sized head atop a rotund, pear-shaped body.</p>
<p>I was ready to admit it — I had a problem.</p>
<p>When I arrived home, I dug deep into the closet and found some old clothes. On the bed I placed them side by side with my current wardrobe. It was eye-opening. There is a stark contrast between a size 38 and a size 54 pants, between a size 56 and a size 46 sports coat, and you wouldn’t believe the difference in the lengths of the belts. I shook my head wondering how this could have happened. Oh yeah, then I remembered, plenty of burgers, fries, pizza and pasta, followed each night by two servings of ice cream — <strong>blasted Ben and Jerry for those single serving containers</strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">The next day I headed down to Danko’s and reactivated my long dormant membership. The owner, Larry Danko, cheerfully greeted me. I told him I had to get back in shape and with an optimistic and confident tone he told me, “You can do it.”</p>
<p>The date was March 5,2008.</p>
<p><a href="http://betterlifeseminars.wordpress.com/2011/12/29/my-transformation-from-passing-through-life-to-living-a-betterlife/captured-videos2-jpg/" rel="attachment wp-att-14"><img class="wp-image-14 alignleft" title="captured-videos2.jpg" src="http://betterlifeseminars.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/captured-videos2.jpg?w=430&#038;h=258" alt="" width="430" height="258" /></a>I have recaptured my physique, but more importantly, I have recaptured my wellness. Being a health care professional I am very aware of the potential damage I may have done to myself. However, I am blessed with being cared for by a cadre of skilled physicians. Dr. Sordoni, my general practitioner, has ensured my overall well-being with complete and thorough exams. Dr. D’Alessandro, my cardiologist, has run me through ECG’s, <a title="Electrocardiography" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrocardiography" rel="wikipedia">EKG</a>’s, a stress test and even a cardiac catherization, encouraging me that my heart is okay. And Dr. Juan Gaia, of Valley Open <a title="Magnetic resonance imaging" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_resonance_imaging" rel="wikipedia">MRI</a>, read my coronary <a title="X-ray computed tomography" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-ray_computed_tomography" rel="wikipedia">CT scan</a> adding his reassurance that, at least for now, there are no apparent signs of damage.</p>
<p>I find it extremely difficult to swallow when overweight people tell me that they are happy the way they are; God knows I dropped that line myself enough times. It is impossible to be happy going through life struggling with simple, every day tasks.</p>
<p>Most importantly though, is that I have lessened my risk for obesity related maladies.  Obesity is a direct cause of some serious diseases; serious, <strong>PREVENTABLE</strong>, diseases. Obesity is not just a concern among adults. It is a growing, dare I use the word, epidemic concern with our youth. <a title="Diabetes mellitus type 2" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes_mellitus_type_2" rel="wikipedia">Type II diabetes</a>, which is commonly referred to as adult onset diabetes, is showing up in children as young as ten years old. <p>Utilizing what I like to call the three D’s; desire, determination and discipline, if you suffer from the ailment of obesity, you too can conquer it. I didn’t have surgery. I didn’t use any drugs. I changed my dietary habits eating unprocessed whole foods and eliminating sugars and starches. I exercise seven days a week incorporating both progressive resistance and endurance exercises.</p>
<p>It isn’t glamorous, it isn’t hip, what it <strong>“is” </strong>is just old school logic and self-control.</p>
<p>I was asked recently that if now that I lost the weight, I thought I was going to live longer. I pondered the question and paused before I spoke.</p>
<p>I said, “I honestly don’t know, however I do know one thing, <em><strong>I am living better</strong></em><strong>.”</strong></p>
